High School Physics Reasoning Workshops

Purpose

These workshops are designed for students currently enrolled in high school physics who want to examine how they reason through problems. The focus is not on memorizing formulas or completing homework, but on interpreting unfamiliar situations, selecting appropriate conceptual models, and explaining that reasoning clearly.

Many students understand the material yet feel uncertain when problems change form. In these sessions, students are asked to explain their thinking and respond to follow-up questions, often revealing where reasoning that initially seems correct begins to break down.

While examples are drawn from physics, the reasoning patterns apply across science, including chemistry and biology.

Format

• 50-minute small-group session
• Students respond to short questions and explain their reasoning out loud
• Follow-up questioning to examine and test that reasoning
• Identification of common reasoning breakdowns and how to rebuild them
• NOT homework help, NOT test prep, NOT formula review, NOT 1-on-1 tutoring

Status

The workshop is currently in development and will be offered initially as a pilot program through a local library. Scheduling and registration details will be shared once confirmed.

Families interested in attending the pilot session may leave their contact information below. One form per student.
